ABOUT
The friendship between an emotionally detached college student and his physically disabled roommate provides the plot for ROOMIES which is set at a fictitious college during the tumultuous late 1960s.
ROOMIES focuses on the friendship of 'David' (played by Paul David Power) and ‘Nick' (played by Steve Ryan), two students with opposing personalities and looks who are forced to share a dorm room . The plot follows the development of the two young men’s friendship through one academic year, addressing the issues raised by David's disability and Nick's "hidden" disability due to a selfish nature. Roomies delivers its message in a sitcom-style comedy along with more serious insightful scenes about disability, identity, respect, acceptance and the importance of others in our lives.
ROOMES is a great example of integrated theatre. Often works delving into the world of the physically disabled are considered and termed “disabled plays” focused on one issue and facet - disability. It's a segregating approach. ROOMIES fosters opportunities for disabled characters to have a stronger presence by ensuring they are an integrated part of the plot - not THE plot. ROOMIES reflects real life - where disabilities are not treated as a separate issue, but instead part of everyday life for those living with a disability and those challenged to understand and respect our differences.
ROOMIES has been produced countless times throughout Atlantic Canada to rave reviews and audience accolades and standing ovations, To date Roomies has been a big hit with audiences in St. John's NL, Moncton NB, Halifax NS, Fredericton NB, Saint John NB (Fundy Fringe Festival) and a return to Halifax as part of the Atlantic Fringe Festival. ROOMIES is currently available for future bookings.
