MONCTON NB — Roomies - a play that gives personal insight into what it's like to live with a physical disability - is coming to the Fundy Fringe Festival in Saint John NB.
Produced by Moncton based Hubcity Theatre, ROOMIES focuses on the friendship of 'David' (played by Paul David Power) and ‘Nick' (played by Steve Ryan), two students with opposing personalities forced to share a dorm room during the late 1960s. The plot follows the development of the two young men’s friendship through one academic year, addressing the issues raised by David's disability, Nick's selfish nature and other stresses put on a friendship.
“This is a play I call integrated theatre - and we need more of it,” says writer and lead actor Paul David Power. “I think ROOMIES helps in furthering arts diversity in Atlantic Canada by integrating a character who happens to have a disability in a broader story rather than have the disability be the only focus of the story."
“One of the core ideals of fringe theatre is there be easily accessible opportunities for all audiences and all artists to participate in Fringe Festivals," says Festival Director Sarah Rankin. "The Fundy Fringe is proud to continue it’s tradition of having all of our venues accessible for all artists and audience, as well as affordable ticket prices. We are also very excited to have Roomies, a powerful play that highlights the importance of accessibility and diversity in our society, in our 2016 line-up."
ROOMIES plays as part of the Fundy Fringe schedule at the Sanctuary Theatre (228 Germain Street) Aug 18 (6:45 pm), Aug 19 (8:45 pm), Aug 20 (4:15 pm).
